Dirty glass.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Long, long time ago (2 years ago) I wrote a post about collodion imperfections, concentrating on silver stains on collodion plates: <a href="http://handmadephotographica.blogspot.ie/2013/02/wet-plate-imperfections-1-silver-lines.html">LINK</a>. This was meant to be a start of a series of posts about collodion artefacts or problems, showing their examples.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I thought, that the simple examples, that I can show and write about with confidence, are probably too obvious for collodion photographers and I've abandoned the idea. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However I've got a feedback from my students and people who are only starting with the process and would like to see even these 'obvious', (not for everyone), examples of fails. I hope more experienced collodionist will contribute to these examples, showing their problems, solutions and comments.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here we go - with dirty glass problems.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Those of you, who has put their hands on the process, know how crucial it is to have a perfectly clean glass and how much effort it can take. Simply a dirty glass can cause peeling off the collodion layer in worse case scenario and offer plenty of marks and stains, as a better option.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Glass can be cleaned in many ways. It is recommended to implement at least two different ways of cleaning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My way of cleaning glass? Well, enough to say, that this part of the process is not my favourite...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I use collodion formulas with big content of alcohol, (which causes, that collodion film sticks better to glass),usually Poe Boy, I am cleaning glass with warm water with washing liquid first and, when dry - with alcohol.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I have a bigger batch to clean, I simply do the first step in the dishwasher. Then I wipe each plate individually with alcohol, applied with cotton pad and rub the plate well. If not absolutely happy after these 2 steps and breath test, I rub and polish more, with clean flannel.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I use collodion mix, which takes extra ether I sub the edges with albumen (1 white of egg + 250 ml of distilled water). Collodion sticks to it very well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used to use Rottenstone or Whiting, (as a second step, after washing with water and washing liquid) but it took much more effort and sometimes this method was giving me cleaning marks, although the plate seemed to be perfectly clean. Sometimes it happened even after adding 3rd step and wiping the plate with an alcohol at the end.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I gave it up in favour of the methods described above, which work for me perfectly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are the examples of plates with cleaning marks (residue of Rottenstone) and peeling of edges.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These examples can give an idea on how you can manipulate the process, and create scratches and marks on purpose, (if you want to). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Finally, after a long, long break I took a few plates outside!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It feels great and I hope to do it often this year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These images were taken close to my house, so I didn't use a portable darkroom (just 'regular' one), but still, climbing down and up a steep hill and jumping through the river with heavy tripod and 4x5 camera, was quite an adventure (and a good exercise too). Here are the results and technical info:</div>

Last Wednesday I had a pleasure to take part in a photographic tour, lead by <a href="http://www.ameliastein.com/">Amelia Stein</a>, organised every year, during the Annual Exhibition in <a href="http://www.rhagallery.ie/">RHA gallery</a>. (27 May - 09 August)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's a good occasion to meet fellow photographers and discuss work, sizes, presentation/framing issues and as always having a chat about digital versus analogue.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a pleasure to present this little lith print there, this year:</div>

<i>Waiting for Z.</i></div>
<br />
This is a part of a series of pictorial landscapes of Wicklow Mountains. I've started it in 2012, and came back to printing it in April this year. My motivation for undertaking this project again was an upcoming exhibition in <a href="https://www.facebook.com/artatgalerielisette">Galerie Lisette</a> (where I decided to show it) and the fact that the above image was chosen for the RHA Exhibition.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The whole series can be viewed on my web site - <a href="http://www.monikafabijanczyk.com/gallery_434067.html#">here</a>. It is on ongoing project so there should be more prints soon.<br />
<br />
These lith prints were created with use of mostly colour holga negatives (and some B&W). I've used Rollei Vintage developer and Fomatone Classic Matt paper.<br />
<br />
The exhibition in the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/artatgalerielisette">Galerie Lisette</a>, Enniskerry, was held in May, but most of these prints stayed in the Gallery and they are there, available for view and purchase.<br />

<div style="background: white; line-height: 14.25pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span lang="EN-GB"><i>Lith printing is one of the alternative photographic techniques, invented in 1970s. In this process a negative is heavily overexposed onto regular or ‘lith’ dedicated paper and developed in highly diluted lith developer. Prints are not developed to completion but snatched and stopped at the right time, which is crucial for the look of the image. The results may vary from very detailed to very grainy, painterly and colourful (from pink to orange to brown).<o:p></o:p></i></span></div>
<i><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 14.25pt;">Each print is very unique and it is very difficult to achieve repeatable results due to quick exhaustion of the developer. The technique was made popular mainly by works of music photographer </span><a href="http://antoncorbijn.com/" style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 14.25pt;">Anton Corbijn</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 14.25pt;">.</span></i>Monikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18196321841623928135noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7988962500623929163.post-9349474576668778882014-06-20T02:24:00.002-07:002014-06-20T02:24:39.776-07:00Tinted Pear<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">This is my first attempt of hand tinting a collodion image. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I've been interested in the subject of hand colouring black and white and collodion photographs for a long time, but somehow there was always something more important on the way. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
And it really can't be easier to start!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For a quick trial I got myself a set of 12 Faber Castell soft pastels in Art & Hobby shop and gave it a try. I was a bit surpriced that the effect is so soft and weak, and it took a moment until I started to see any results. The image I've chosen for a test was a bit flat and overexposed and color actually made it much nicer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I quite like the visible brush strokes here, I've removed them later and the result was more ordinary. Anyway it is very easy to remove the colour, even unintentionally.. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Looking forward to further tests.</div>

Last year I was mainly busy as a first time mother, but also trying to organise some workshops and new working space. We had to reorganise our house, for the new arrival and my previous studio was sucrificed. Orginising a new one took a little bit of time - I've been looking for some space to rent and considering an option of building one. (In the meantime I had no place and time for photography (!))<br />
<br />
As it befits architects we went for the second option and together with Lubor we designed and constructed a little studio for me, in our garden.<br />
It measures 3.6 x 2.1m (internal) and it comprises all what I need for wet and dry work. There's nothing fancy, just a dry and wet table with ordinary kitchen sink, and some storage. It has two windows with darkening option. There are still some electrical works ongoing, and some improvements need to be done, but basicaly it's tested and it works well. I am very happy with it!<br />
<br />
The plan is to work hard in it this year :) I'd like to go back to the techniques I've already started to work with a while ago, but haven't got the chance to get deeper in it, try new techniques and materials....<br />
I hope the readers will go back to checking this blog for some interesting reading.<br />
<br />
I am always interested in somebody's working space, especially photographer's space, so for those who has a similar interest I enclose some photographs of the new studio and how it was builded.<br />

Silver lines.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
Imperfections or better - artefacts are so unique in the wet plate process that they are the main reason which draws photographers and artists into it.<br />
At the beginning of the journey with wet plate they seem to be unexpected and mysterious, usually welcomed eagerly, adding a new dimension to the work. /Of course not always and not all of them , it is still the artist who decides if the 'accident' that happened adds something special to the photograph./<br />
Some artists stay with this approach and do not seek for a perfect clean plates (not looking too far - Sally Mann could be a great example). Some are creating dirty plates on purpose, adding dust and dirt or even blood or fingertips ( so many options open!)<br />
<br />
After a while of working with collodion each photographer realises, that even if he or she doesn't have a background or deep understanding of chemistry, the 'mystery' faults have reasons and are, to some extent, controllable. And this is when a big journey starts.<br />
Over a time of using wet plate, photographers learn to approach difficulties systematicly, selecting and eliminating elements that can cause the fault. The knowledge of the process is the ability to solve the problem and it is not always easy.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately it is very difficult to source images showing and explaining different artefacts and faults of the collodion process. All what is offered in literature is a written description and I found it difficult to recognise which description suits best to the problem I had at the time.<br />
<br />
I started to collect the images showing different problems and would like to show a few examples of more typical faults, characteristic for collodion technique.<br />
<br />
I would like to start with one of the simplest examples - silver lines.<br />

<span lang="EN-GB">Lines, bubbles, lace like or organic patterns - these marks are created </span>when it comes to rapid and uneven coverege of the plate with silver nitrate sensitizing solution. They are more likely to happen when using a tray for sensitizing and this is the reason why it is usefull to have a special vertical tank with a dipper for this step of the process.<br />
Sensitizing in a tray can result in this type of image:</div>

The following plate was accidentaly droped into a tray with silver nitrate, it slipped out from my hands, when working with darkbox on location. Splash caused bubbles and stains (centre of the image):<br />

I know what some of you may think about it and I've got ambivalent feelings about this too. But it is good to experiment a little bit sometimes and check what comes out from the connection of 'the new' and 'the old'. I think it's exciting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Recently I did some contact prints and enlargements on collodion, using transparencies.</div>

This digital (sic!) image was taken a while ago in Italian Dolomites, (while climbing ferrata Giuseppe Olivieri, Tofane). I printed it as a rather week, B&W transparency and gave it 90s exposure @ f4.5, (5 months old collodion, poor boy).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I put the transparency directly on the wet plate (printed side up), but I was lucky it came out well. I think it would be better to put it somehow with a little distance to the plate.When putting it on the plate it is quite easy to create some stains, get air bubbles between transparency and the collodion film or scratch the plate. (and this was just 4x5 print, I'd imagine it would be even more difficult with something bigger)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The second image is an example of an enlarged print, from 6x6 colour transparency, 90 s exposure, with dodging/burning the sky :).(it is cropped, enlarged on 4x5 glass)</div>

<br />
I must agree that once you know how the image was made you can feel cheated. Someone may say there is no 'life' in it, it's like an image of an image. But on the other hand it opens a lot of interesting possibilities, overcoming the limits of the collodion process and allowing to use collodion expression with any image.<br />
I'd rather concentrate here on 'technicalities' and possibilities and leave the decision, if it's right to use collodion this way, to you...<br />
<br />
I didn't make too many tests, just wanted to check how it goes and works. I have a very limited sources of transparencies (rather don't use them) and I randomly chose an image for printing on transparency, giving it one-off try. I've made an enlargement of 6x6 digitally printed B&W transparency and it's also working.<br />
With neither of the image I got the quality that I'm getting from the camera and taking into account some loss of the quality caused by the enlargement, I guess it would be difficult.<br />
However, I think that a little bit more experiments with different densities and contrasts of the transparencies would allow to achieve quite nice and interesting prints.Monikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18196321841623928135noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7988962500623929163.post-68503513927277453922012-08-21T15:17:00.000-07:002012-08-22T13:13:53.683-07:00Van Dyke Brown printingVanDyke
printing was on my list of the 19th century ‘techniques to try’ for a long time. While working with cyanotypes, collodion and other techniques I had most of the chemicals needed for VDB handy and the only new ingredient I had to buy was a
tartaric acid (easly accessible, for example, on ebay).<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">

Brown process is based on iron (iron ferrous citrate) and is one of the POP techniques, similarly like cyanotype, platinum or palladium. VanDykes have a wide tonality
range compared with pl/pd prints, when printed with the right negative, but the process is cheaper and less
complicated. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
As Sarah van Keuren explains in her book 'A non silver manual', Van Dykes (along with pl/pd) have self-masking characteristics - shadow areas turn reddish brown during the exposure, acting as a filter. It allows for longer exposure of hightlights without losing details in the shadows. (It doesn't happen with cyanotype)<br />
Kallitypes (similar process, but using ferrous oxalate) and Van Dykes are often called 'the poor man's platinum prints'.<br />

<span style="line-height: 18px;">I experimented a bit with different negatives, single and double coating and papers. </span></div>
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">The main issue stays, of course, a
proper negative. In my first tries I realised it’s not easy to get a good print
from original B&W negative (I think it’s easier with cyanotype) and decided to stick to digitally printed transparencies for a moment. From the papers, I had, I like the results with Fabriano Artistico </span><span style="line-height: 18px;">the most</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">. Double coating makes the browns stronger, but </span><span style="line-height: 18px;"> f</span><span style="line-height: 18px;">or some reason I prefer single coating prints. (I'm also having problems with second coating streaks visible) Didn't use any contrasting agent so far.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span>
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">Scanning doesn't really make them a justice as it exagerates the structure of the paper,(I'm struggling with this for a while - not sure how to scan papers like that), but here are the first prints that I'm quite happy with:</span><br />

I didn't transform my holga at all as I still want to use it with film. I just stick my aluminium plate inside the camera body with an electrical tape, along two edges, to prevent it from moving. Working with such a small plate is challenging, but it's a good fun. Wondering if it will be feasible with 35mm?<br />

Close to Closure is an ongoing group exhibition, in Dublin, where I'm presenting a series of wet plate portraits I took recently. <span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">Cindy got lost in Killruderry's old stables and sheds discovering interesting requisites. Martin was playing with different patterns and holes created by a specific pouring of collodion and tested his pinhole camera. And Dermot tried a little bit of everything with his own Graflex camera.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">It was a great weekend and we've poured away o lot of chemicals. Irish changeable weather didn't make establishing exposure times easy, as usual, but even though we did a lot of nice plates (examples below)</span></div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Lith printing is my new adventure, started just recently.<br />
I thought it may be a nice technique for printing collodion glass negatives and I truly find the results much more interesting then with traditional B&W printing.<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">I did only two printing sessions - with film negative and with collodion ambrotypes and </span><span style="background-color: white;">I still have a lot to learn, but I really like it so far. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">I like the fact that the results are unrepeatable and a bit unpredictable. On the other hand the choice of paper, exposure and development times give many options of controll and allows for creating completely different prints for the same negative. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">The interesting fact about lith printing is the way of controlling the contrast - brights are controlled by the exposure and darks by the development and can be adjusted separately. Short exposure time and long development will result in bigger contrast and fine grain, while long exposure and short development gives less contrasty and grainy, often 'dreamy' like prints. It will also influence the colour of the print. But a lot depends on the quality and age of the developer, which is exhausting very quickly. Development in this process is called 'infectious' what means that dark tones develop faster then bright ones and the darker they become the faster they develop. Watching this and waiting for the 'snatch' point can be very exciting. </span><br />
<br />
In my first steps<span style="background-color: white;"> I have used Fomatone MG classic matt and gloss papers and Rollei Vintage Lith Developer, and here are the examples:</span><br />
<br />
contact print from 8x10 collodion plate, 40s exposure (f8,just to have comparison with times used for enlarging film negs) 6min development, <span style="background-color: white;">Fomatone MG classic gloss</span><span style="background-color: white;">:</span><br />

<span style="text-align: left;">After a long break in cyanotyping I did a few new prints of my old photographs, and it was a nice change after WPC,(comparing the complexity of these processes), that I was concentrated on for the last year.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I have used different papers that I found in my studio and was a bit surprised with a Fabriano 5 HP smooth paper, that I've used for the first two images. First of all after applying the chemicals on the paper and after drying there were still brush strokes visible. They are visible on prints. </span><span style="text-align: left;">Secondly highlights never got bright, but stayed quite intensively blue. All that may be connected with my chemicals getting a bit old now, what in connection wih this 50% cotton paper gave unexpected results.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">However I quite like these prints and their more ' dreamy' aesthetics.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Although it's already 3 weeks after the workshop in Killruddery I'd like to make a short resume of this event and introduce a lovely group of brave photographers, who decided to take part in this dangerous and exhausting venture :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is an ending portrait, so, as you can see they stayed in quite a good form after all this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

my lovely workshop group: Alice, Nick, Stephen an Sally (from left to right)<br />

On Sunday I met with Marta and we went through the whole wet plate process and did a few plates together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Marta is a very talented and ambitious photographer and picked up easly all the stages of the process, having a perfect 'pour' (of collodion and developer) from the beginning to the end of the workshop.</div>
